The automatic 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission adapts to suit individual driving styles. It is perfect for everything from comfortable cruising through to a very dynamic drive. In addition to automatic gear selection, it is of course possible to shift gears manually at any time – optionally with the assistance of the Optimum Shift Indicator. The driver can change gears using the shortened gear lever or the gearshift paddles on the Sport leather steering wheel.
In SPORT mode, the gear shifts are configured for the best possible performance. Fast engine speed transitions between the gears bolster powerful acceleration. The engine always maintains a speed at which it can access very high power output at any time. The Launch Control function regulates the ideal starting engine speed, allowing maximum acceleration from a standing start. At high speeds, the eight gear reduces the engine speed and fuel consumption. This is also where the newly developed converter clutch comes into play. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission works together with the engine to deliver smooth gear shifts and top figures in efficiency and power delivery.

  • 8-speed Steptronic transmission

    The 8-speed Steptronic transmission sets new benchmarks in comfort and dynamic performance and is a key element of BMW EfficientDynamics. The unusually fine increments between gears facilitate optimum power delivery at all speeds. This reduces fuel consumption significantly, while allowing the driver to enjoy increased sportiness and dynamic performance. The engine speed is reduced, particularly at high speeds, which in turn reduces both fuel consumption and engine noise.
    The converter clutch also helps – even if the car is changed to the manual mode. The fast engine speed transitions and precise transmission tuning guarantee incredibly smooth gearshifts.
    Integrated functions – such as the predictive drivetrain, the constant monitoring of the vehicle's movements and the traffic situation – considerably affect the way the transmission shifts gears. Regardless of the current driving mode, the system always selects the most suitable gear. The transmission control unit is linked to the navigation system, so depending on the route, the predictive drivetrain switches between a more athletic, responsive setting (SPORT mode) and a more comfortable setting with fewer gear shifts (COMFORT mode).



Commanding power delivery and silky smooth running are the hallmarks of the BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine from the BMW EfficientDynamics engine range. This powerful 3.0-litre engine combines the Valvetronic fully variable valve control including Double-VANOS, High-Precision Injection and a TwinScroll turbocharger to optimally fill the cylinders. The result: a peak performance of 240 kW (326 hp) and a maximum torque of 450 Nm at 1,380–5,000 rpm. This means that the Turbo petrol engine accelerates the BMW 340i Touring from 0 to 100 km/h in a breathtaking 5.1 s, reaching a top speed of 250 km/h. Thanks to various intelligent technological innovations, its combined fuel consumption rate is just 7.0 to 6.8 litres per 100 km, with CO2 emissions of only 164 to 158 g/km.

The BMW 320d Touring EfficientDynamics Edition with BMW TwinPower Turbo 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine delivers impressively on fuel efficiency and thrift. The engine generates 120 kW (163 hp) at 4,000 rpm and delivers maximum torque of 400 Nm between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. Enabling the BMW 320d Touring EfficientDynamics Edition to reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 8.2 to 8.1 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is only 4.5 to 4.0 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions are just 118 to 104 g/km.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo 2.0 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine is incredibly responsive, even at low engine speeds, and equipped with new generation CommonRail injection has exceptionally smooth running. A variable turbine geometry turbocharger supplies high boost pressure and consequently high torque and powerful thrust across a wide rpm spectrum.
The vehicle's exceptional efficiency is partly due to its optimised transmission, adjusted optimum shift Indicator and various aerodynamic improvements.


When it comes to driving dynamics, the BMW 3 Series has been setting new standards for generations. Further developments in damper technology, a revamped chassis and more sophisticated steering guarantee considerably more driving pleasure. Fine-tuning of the suspension has boosted both the longitudinal and lateral characteristics. This applies not only to the standard suspension, but also to the M Sport suspension and the Adaptive M suspension. In addition, steering precision has been improved, rolling movements reduced and directional stability optimised. The BMW 3 Series Touring impresses with its excellent roadholding, perfect handling and outstanding agility while, at the same time, offering the utmost comfort in all driving situations.

  • Adaptive M suspension

    The Adaptive M suspension is set ten millimetres lower, further increasing the BMW 3 Series' full dynamic potential. The driver can adjust the driving characteristics to enable whichever driving style is most appealing at the time – from comfortable to extremely athletic. Whichever setting is chosen, the Adaptive M suspension's electrically controlled dampers calibrate to suit the road conditions within fractions of a second. The system also uses numerous sensors that measure wheel vibrations, as well as vehicle speed, in order to achieve optimal damping and vehicle safety.
    COMFORT mode can be selected for relaxed travelling. SPORT mode enables a distinctly athletic suspension setting with noticeably tighter damper settings. For extremely dynamic driving, SPORT+ mode is the best choice: the DTC function (Dynamic Traction Control) is activated, which allows more wheel-slip on the drive wheels, for athletic driving that pushes the limits of the car's dynamics. However, the DSC function isn't completely disabled; rather it intervenes much later – within the limits of what is physically possible and safe – in order to stabilise the vehicle.

  • Variable sport steering

    The variable sport steering with Servotronic creates a direct and agile steering response and ensures less physical effort is required to turn the wheel. It reacts to the angle of the steering wheel independently from the current speed with various steering ratios. This reduces the steering movement required when steering at particularly large angles. It features speed-dependent, variable power steering. This significantly increases agility and improves handling when driving dynamically through sharp bends and corners, or when swerving to avoid obstacles. It also makes parking, turning and manoeuvring easier. For small steering angles, the system provides excellent directional stability and a very high degree of steering precision.

  • BMW xDrive

    The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system adapts perfectly to even the most challenging road surface conditions, ensuring optimal traction at all times. xDrive and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) ensure that the BMW remains safe and stable. Controlled via the DSC sensor system, xDrive flexibly and quickly distributes drive power between the axles in order to prevent oversteer or understeer on bends, thereby ensuring outstanding directional stability. Moreover, it guarantees a rapid, safe acceleration even on slippery or steep stretches. In critical road conditions, the DSC doesn't need to intervene as much. Thus, BMW xDrive combines all the advantages of an all-wheel drive system – traction, directional stability and driving safety – with classic BMW agility.


The Driving Experience Control lets the driver choose between the standard engine and transmission settings of COMFORT mode, the more efficient ECO PRO mode, the dynamic SPORT mode, or the SPORT+ mode, which pushes dynamic driving to the limits. ECO PRO mode adjusts the characteristics of the Steptronic transmission (if present) and the heating/air conditioning settings to make the drive as fuel-efficient as possible. It reduces fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. Further fuel savings potential is possible with the coasting function and ECO PRO Route, which suggests an efficiency-optimised route that takes into account the volume of traffic, as well as individual driving styles and local conditions in order to suggest a route that optimises efficiency and thereby reduces fuel consumption. The "coasting" function allows the vehicle to coast along the road at up to 160 km/h without additional power input when the driver takes his or her foot from the gas without braking.

COMFORT mode guarantees an extremely comfortable driving experience by suitably adjusting the settings of the suspension components. In the SPORT and SPORT+ modes, all drive and suspension settings are adjusted for more dynamic driving. The engine is more spontaneously responsive, the gears of the automatic transmission are shifted at higher speeds, the shifting points for the manual transmission are shown later, and on the whole the vehicle reacts much more directly and dynamically.


The intelligent energy management in the BMW 3 Series Touring is provided by a number of standard-feature BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, including the Automatic Start/Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, electric power steering and Optimum Shift Indicator. The interplay between these technologies ensures sustainable mobility and maximum efficiency.

  • Automatic Start/Stop function

    The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only used when the car is actually moving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill, for example at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car is idling and the driver's foot is off the clutch (manual transmission), or when the car brakes to a complete standstill (Steptronic transmission).
    A signal in the Info Display indicates that the Automatic Start/Stop function is active. As soon as the driver presses the clutch (manual transmission) or takes their foot off the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine springs back to life automatically.
    This function never compromises driving comfort or safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its optimal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated or cooled, if the battery level is too low or if the steering wheel is being turned. If necessary, a central control unit restarts the engine even when at a standstill, for example if the car begins to roll or if condensation starts to form on the windscreen. The Automatic Start/Stop function can be switched off at any time with the push of a button.

  • Brake Energy Regeneration

    Brake Energy Regeneration lowers fuel consumption and increases the efficiency of the drive system. When the driver eases off the accelerator or presses the brake, the electric motor turns the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy. It is stored in the high-voltage battery and can be used to power the electric motor.

  • Electric power steering

    Electric power steering optimally adjusts the steering support to the current speed. This results in direct, precise steering behaviour at high speeds and effortless manoeuvrability when parking. The steering only consumes energy when it is really necessary. This saves fuel and reduces emissions.
    Instead of a hydraulic pump, it relies on an electric motor. In conventional systems, this pump must be constantly powered by the engine, but this electric support only runs when the steering wheel is being moved. When driving straight ahead or maintaining the same steering angle (e.g. on long bends), the electric motor is not active and does not consume any energy. By flexibly adjusting the steering support to match the current driving situation and speed, steering comfort is improved.

  • Optimum Shift Indicator

    Perfectly timed gear shifts can significantly help save fuel, particularly in urban traffic and over long distances. Change gears at the right time, use less fuel – the engine’s electronics system identifies the most efficient gear, based on road conditions and engine speed. An arrow lights up in the Info Display to show when it would be more efficient to shift into a higher or lower gear. The system also recognises quick acceleration, and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed has increased. Drivers using a Steptronic transmission in manual mode also receive relevant shifting suggestions. BMW internal comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around four percent less fuel.
